"When Krissy and Mykel set up Tzedakah Theatre in 2014 it was estimated that there were up to 36 million slaves worldwide, 10,000 - 13,000 in the UK, and between 1-2% rescued. A study in 2017 suggested that there are now more than 40 million slaves worldwide, tens of thousands in the UK, and less than 1% rescued.
These statistics are not okay. We were not going to stand for it then, and we're not going to stand for it now!
This was why we founded Tzedakah, and this is why we are still fighting.
Part of the problem is that people don't know that slavery still exists. If people don't know, they don't talk. If they don't talk, they don't do. So we are here to start the conversation, which we hope will lead to action. This is why we aim to inspire, educate, and challenge a generation who aren't afraid to stand against Modern Day Slavery.
A part of striving toward this aim is achieved by collaborating with various charities and organisations, which is why we were excited to #ShineALightOnSlavery as part of the international #EndItMovement on the 22nd February. We did this by running our Sound of Silence performance in the atrium at Central which encouraged passers by to listen to verbatim stories of slavery in the UK.
It was so encouraging to see students, staff, workers, and even open-day-goers stop, listen, and find out how they can start to end slavery in their own lives.
Thank you Central for standing with us as we fight for freedom!"
