#CentralSaysEnough Reaches the Mayor's Office

On Friday 9th March 2018, Central SU & The Royal Central School of Speech & Drama were proud to host the launch of the Mayor's Offices' £44 million strategy to end violence against women & girls. The Mayor joined London's Night Czar Amy Lamé and London Victim's Commissioner Claire Waxman for the event, during which staff and students from Central engaged in conversations about the issues at the heart of the strategy with black feminist organisation Imkaan.

According to the Mayor's Office report, "The Mayor’s new wide-ranging strategy follows the biggest in-depth consultation with survivors as well as Londoners, police and partners. It includes measures to tackle rape, sexual assault, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), trafficking, controlling behaviour, forced marriages, stalking, harassment, and misogyny - building on the recent international #MeToo and #TimesUp campaigns."

The opportunity to host such an important event came about as word of our #CentralSaysEnough campaign reached the Mayor's office. #CentralSaysEnough is a truly collaborative, preventative model for tackling sexual harassment and violence on our campus. Central SU are working with our institution to implement a number of zero-tolerance practices that we hope will begin to become engrained in life at our school. More information on the campaign can be found here:

On the day, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan signed the #CentralSaysEnough pledge, committing to naming and calling out specific behaviours that constitute sexual harrassment. He joins over 200 signatories, including local MP Tulip Siddiq and Principal Gavin Henderson.

Imkaan is a UK-based, black feminist organisation dedicated to addressing violence against Black and 'Minority Ethnic' (BME) women and girls. The conversations they facilitated included topics such as online abuse, harassment on campus & intersectionality.
